In this exclusive feature we introduce to you the vibrant spirit of Jay PoeTree – a poet whose journey through life is as adventurous and creative as the verses he weaves. From the tender stage of primary school, Jay found solace, meaning and expression in poetry, setting the stage for a lifelong passion that would shape his identity.

Where It All Began

My journey with poetry began in primary school, around the time I was in class five. It was during this period that I first discovered my love for art. As I participated in drama and music festivals throughout primary and high school, I found myself being drawn to the spoken word. It was a form of expression that resonated deeply with me, and I soon realized that others were captivated by it as well. In high school, I delved into unconventional poetry, exploring themes and styles that were not typically taught in the classroom setting. It was during this time that my passion for poetry truly blossomed, igniting a love not just for poetry, but for the arts as a whole.

What Sparks Jay's Poetic Fire?

What continues to inspire me is my deep-seated love for expression. I've always found it challenging to articulate my thoughts and feelings verbally, but poetry has emerged as my saving grace. It's the medium through which I can convey the nuances of my inner world with ease. While I may struggle to speak spontaneously about certain topics, poetry provides me with a structured outlet for self-expression. Conversely, there are aspects of my experiences that I can only communicate effectively through poetry; attempting to express them through conventional means feels nearly impossible.

But What Lies At The Heart of Jay's Poetry?

My poetry delves deep into my personal experiences - drawing from my introspective nature, my faith, and my keen observation of the world around me.

Who or What Was Your Fuel Back Then When You Were Young, Literally , In The Creative Space?

During my formative years, the creative industry lacked the robust structure it enjoys today. However, I found unwavering support from my teacher of English, who recognized the potential in my poetic expressions and encouraged my growth. Additionally, my involvement in music during high school fostered a supportive environment, with friends and family, including my brother who sang alongside my poetry performances, cheering me on. As I continued on my journey, I crossed paths with fellow poets, further enriching my artistic development.

So, What Distinguishes a Good Poet?

It is the ability to see beyond the ordinary, to find beauty and meaning in the mundane. It's about creating connections and offering fresh perspectives that resonate with the soul. For me, authenticity is the cornerstone of good poetry, as it allows for genuine connections and resonates deeply with audiences. I believe anyone can be a poet.

Take Us Through The Process of Coming Up With a Poetic Piece

When it comes to my poetry, it's all about my headspace. There's no fixed schedule for when I write my pieces. Sometimes, the words flow effortlessly in a single day, while other times, it may take me weeks or even months to craft a poem. Inspiration strikes me randomly, I would say, and I seize it whenever it arrives, whether it's in a burst of creativity or over a gradual period of reflection. Occasionally, I'm tasked with writing pieces on a deadline for clients, and I strive to deliver within the given timeframe while maintaining the integrity of my work.

But Does Poetry Pay The Bills?

While poetry can be financially rewarding, like working with corporate organizations during events, the landscape in Kenya moves at a sluggish pace. Few poets can rely solely on their craft for sustenance, highlighting the challenge of making a living through poetry alone. Unfortunately, poetry hasn't gained traction as a significant income source in Kenya. Over time, the enthusiasm and creativity of poets dwindle due to unmet financial expectations. The entertainment industry's structure undervalues poetry, often relegating poets to brief performances or opening acts. This perpetuates a perception among audiences that poetry lacks significance. Additionally, there's a lack of investment in improving the poetry industry, further hindering its growth and potential for financial viability. In my experience, earning from Kenya takes building a personal brand as a poet and propagating  that into yielding fruit financially.

What Does It Take To Bring Out The Expressive Nature Among Men?

Many men, myself included, often struggle to embrace sentimentality, opting to suppress our emotions. While society encourages men to connect with their feelings, it remains a challenge for many. In my perspective, a man's fulfillment lies in finding and pursuing his purpose. For me, it's not about becoming overly emotional, but rather about channeling our emotions towards meaningful endeavors that align with our sense of purpose.

Would you trade albinism for melanin?

Growing up with albinism, it often surprised people when I excelled in various endeavors. Their reactions were typically along the lines of, "You achieved this despite having albinism?" I harbor no bitterness or regrets about being born with albinism. If it weren't for albinism, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to become Mr. Albinism Kenya and raise awareness through my creative work. However, if I could change one thing, it would be to avoid sunburns and improve my eyesight.

So, Jay's Event Dubbed “Reflections- The You in My Story”...

The name for the event emerged from deep introspection on my work. Typically, I host an event called "Taste of My Skin," which hasn't made a comeback post Covid-19 pandemic. Determined to share my poetry with the world once more, I decided to kickstart my stage performances with a new event. As I reflected on my creative journey, the theme of "Reflections" naturally emerged, encapsulating the essence of introspection and self-discovery. Through "Reflections: The You in My Story," I aim to inspire participants to embark on their own journeys of growth and self-realization. My advice to attendees is to seek their true purpose, to identify what resonates deeply within them, and to pursue it with unwavering determination. Ultimately, I hope this event serves as a catalyst for individuals to find meaning and fulfillment in their lives.

This Is Why You Should Attend The Event

We intend to curate a space where one can immerse themselves in the captivating works of a diverse array of poets. Many of these poets draw from their personal experiences, making their pieces deeply relatable and impactful. In addition to enjoying the performances, our event will offer ample opportunities for reflection and connection. Step away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and engage in meaningful conversations with fellow attendees. And of course, we'll sprinkle in some entertainment to ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience for all.

What Would You Want Your Legacy To Be With Reflections

I envision this event as more than just a one-time occurrence. Rather, I aspire for it to become a recurring communal gathering where individuals feel empowered to share their emotions and stories in a safe and nurturing environment. My goal is to cultivate a space where everyone's voice is valued and heard, fostering a sense of belonging and community that extends far beyond the confines of a single event.
